I had the pleasure of journeying downtown to partake in a most enchanting endeavor: live sketching custom portraits for the esteemed Netflix sensation, Bridgerton in collaboration with InDelight. What a spectacle it was! The ambiance was positively enchanting, adorned with exquisite floral arrangements, whilst melodies of Bridgerton's beloved tunes filled the air, courtesy of talented musicians in full Bridgerton regalia. The attendees were a sight to behold in their Regency attire, truly embracing the spirit of the occasion.</span><p></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6JNfKow6O4DK2EwmVgtZlVsIz_Ly7mz2l5KgJgLTjXMNkF24jYnMrOvf9A9H7o4SNtWrfZMNrwEfjySYRYvJ-FBodXYH_wNkm_q6RdU6LIX4ri49YrIWFjrCfFwNlMeZUxP2Ve8KtqHaVZZ0wprWVnLXxXVOkxvdXEqjWFYEhsfWUdqJiOBtIdGKX9cY/s11000/Bridgerton%20Portraits-Brooke%20Hagel-Adjoa%20Andoh-Julia%20Quinn-Event%20Artist-Live%20Sketching.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="background-color: white; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; font-size: 16px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><img border="0" data-original-height="11000" data-original-width="4480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6JNfKow6O4DK2EwmVgtZlVsIz_Ly7mz2l5KgJgLTjXMNkF24jYnMrOvf9A9H7o4SNtWrfZMNrwEfjySYRYvJ-FBodXYH_wNkm_q6RdU6LIX4ri49YrIWFjrCfFwNlMeZUxP2Ve8KtqHaVZZ0wprWVnLXxXVOkxvdXEqjWFYEhsfWUdqJiOBtIdGKX9cY/s16000/Bridgerton%20Portraits-Brooke%20Hagel-Adjoa%20Andoh-Julia%20Quinn-Event%20Artist-Live%20Sketching.jpg" /></a></p><p><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, Segoe UI, Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, Noto Sans, sans-serif, Helvetica Neue, Arial, Apple Color Emoji, Segoe UI Emoji, Segoe UI Symbol, Noto Color Emoji;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">In the company of luminaries such as the illustrious Adjoa Andoh, known affectionately as "Lady Danbury," and the esteemed authoress behind the Bridgerton tales, Julia Quinn herself, I found myself sketching in a world of elegance and refinement. I jumped at the chance to work with my favorite marker brand again and the two sketches I created were recently published on their social media pages so I thought it would be fun to share with you a little behind the scenes of these illustrations. <p></p><p>The team at Copic was open to anything I'd like to do as it relates to fashion illustration, my area of expertise. They provided me with a list of prompts I could use as inspiration and I chose "roses" for the first and "airy" for the second. I chose roses because there was a dress by Sachin and Babi worn by influencer <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgp7ALeOCQ_/">Racheal Martino</a> that I loved and had been wanted to sketch which was covered in different shades of blue roses! And this was the perfect project to sketch that look (shown below.) </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif1e9yauOQmI8MtuzqFIn7MpvD4NUzozdQTYhCRh7e1gMa4uXV6OnamyVWB6j8AcezOEwsFj2MDw8jWv6zMSFED5Ry7TE3M1DNqIsBWba-H7PBlmFAU1oNQli6V3dqR1X4DqryA3IxGpqibWxdi40oUioxjPeCQUC4fZ5Mw4vJtXmn0b7ZaiIwzGHhpg/s3939/IMG_6131.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Copic fashion illustration by Brooke Hagel 2" border="0" data-original-height="3939" data-original-width="2684" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif1e9yauOQmI8MtuzqFIn7MpvD4NUzozdQTYhCRh7e1gMa4uXV6OnamyVWB6j8AcezOEwsFj2MDw8jWv6zMSFED5Ry7TE3M1DNqIsBWba-H7PBlmFAU1oNQli6V3dqR1X4DqryA3IxGpqibWxdi40oUioxjPeCQUC4fZ5Mw4vJtXmn0b7ZaiIwzGHhpg/s16000/IMG_6131.PNG" title="Copic fashion illustration by Brooke Hagel 2" /></a></div><p></p><p>For the airy illustration I was inspired to create a flowing white dress with flounces that rippled in the wind as figure walked. (See top image) I love drawing walking poses and having the figure walk would add airy movement to both the dress and hair. I made her skin tone a dark shade of black to contrast nicely with the white/gray dress and I love how it came out! I hope you enjoyed this little behind the scene insider info into what went into making these sketches for Copic! </p><p>For similar posts check out: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2020/12/fashion-illustration-gift-guide.html" target="_blank">Fashion Illustration Gift Guide</a></li><li><a href="https://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2020/05/frontline-figure-custom-illustration.html" target="_blank">Our Frontline Figure Custom Illustration Series</a></li><li><a href="https://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2019/12/3-ways-to-find-inspiration-when-facing.html" target="_blank">3 Ways to Find Inspiration When Facing a Creative Block</a> </li></ul><p></p>Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-26152402663706036032022-05-26T14:32:00.006-04:002022-05-26T14:35:35.958-04:00Happy 14th Blogiversary Fabulous Doodles<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: helvetica; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8uHxtWRwsC8qx39bIuRuakZNup-iiCP4YIZ7JvxNpucfq9itOaOYl238TwW_o1pZaVHUTpsGeJjzyu-7FESTOGEpQCFSqzm3ci5WEBK5_9HzUZ_zcppjMnfTgNwySRUVvChrgXdk2JavI1pXMY6LsgpUq6OHFRLiGEKIc5qFvH77NHQVwSBISfSc8rg/s2000/14th%20Blogiversary-brooke%20hagel-fashion%20illustrator.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8uHxtWRwsC8qx39bIuRuakZNup-iiCP4YIZ7JvxNpucfq9itOaOYl238TwW_o1pZaVHUTpsGeJjzyu-7FESTOGEpQCFSqzm3ci5WEBK5_9HzUZ_zcppjMnfTgNwySRUVvChrgXdk2JavI1pXMY6LsgpUq6OHFRLiGEKIc5qFvH77NHQVwSBISfSc8rg/s16000/14th%20Blogiversary-brooke%20hagel-fashion%20illustrator.png" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Quicksand;">I<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-size: small;">t’s my fourteenth Blogiversary! I don’t blog often anymore now that social media has taken over however this blog is important to me, it’s where my business started. It marks where I began, how I began and how far I’ve come. I started blogging all those years ago soley as a way to share my sketches and designer sketches I loved. I wanted Fabulous Doodles to be a fashion illustration treasure trove. At the time I didn’t realize my passion could or would become my livelihood. To look back now and scroll through the hundreds of posts of sketches and luxury fashion brand client work is really something. I’m proud of this blog, my portfolio of work it shares and the incredible client list I’ve been able to build with it. The stunning space and meticulous merchandizing have made it one of my favorite Manhattan stores for decades. I've sketched events for the brand previously under both the Ralph Lauren label and Polo but this was my first time sketching in their iconic flagship--and it did not disappoint! <p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ6L-gviPYcKKpvO3m4t8uXIPsHmvXWjQTqHfgjAZOo8E19Os1Ja6fXhWCFu_s0FQKjja6MOlz1KkSWsVuoO_OF2VhHfQs_c5U78V_989VQsiwhG1cMvVFN6bFxfESOqSaRqxaX25LZbpnmasg5sQBt_Dhfatq3tCxXeor-uaBPl5Wwl4mWLBNCIyQWQ/s1324/Fashion%20illustrator%20Brooke%20Hagel-Ralph%20lauren-In%20residence%20artist.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1324" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ6L-gviPYcKKpvO3m4t8uXIPsHmvXWjQTqHfgjAZOo8E19Os1Ja6fXhWCFu_s0FQKjja6MOlz1KkSWsVuoO_OF2VhHfQs_c5U78V_989VQsiwhG1cMvVFN6bFxfESOqSaRqxaX25LZbpnmasg5sQBt_Dhfatq3tCxXeor-uaBPl5Wwl4mWLBNCIyQWQ/s16000/Fashion%20illustrator%20Brooke%20Hagel-Ralph%20lauren-In%20residence%20artist.png" /></a></div>The desk where they set me up to draw for the day was at the base of their notorious staircase. It's the key spot of the whole store, where everyone who walks through the store passes. It's also raised up on a small staircase platform and was styled, of course, to perfection with large spheres at my feet, a grand antler candelabra to my side and flanked by luxurious curtains. <p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxXnPHxFM58Cv2mJJjqUziP-eKz1vriCji6FNwkdotlLCI32oHv08KsVKHPRDFKS-sCY3XltAX5NjuZD1kE2g' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />It was a regular shopping day in the store, open to all and not a private event, but to my pleasant surprise there were many influencers and notable people who came by, including a former Miss. America, an actor as well as numerous fashion bloggers and influencers. Over on <a href="http://www.instagram.com/brookehagel" target="_blank">the gram</a> I shared a bunch of videos from the event, the one of above being one of my favorites! There's nothing better than seeing the twinkle in a persons eye the moment they see their custom sketch. <p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPAg5z6DpByzHgERAC96e-mmHR4p9ngGeN82yoEfsKm4fW6uihH9ml4DitVEr98F_g-SCh1nI_XfcBrL1VK4Jn04FX2C9S112p9p9im1UBSlcfp69Y_FY_U75cNXZqxeTiEpZrNTOp6XvUzKPXq1eQXoAv7CjKo6N5UVTi60Wu6ki9Oc6fSdX8Rl66sA/s1500/Fashion%20illustrations-by-Brooke%20Hagel-for%20Ralph%20Lauren-influencers.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPAg5z6DpByzHgERAC96e-mmHR4p9ngGeN82yoEfsKm4fW6uihH9ml4DitVEr98F_g-SCh1nI_XfcBrL1VK4Jn04FX2C9S112p9p9im1UBSlcfp69Y_FY_U75cNXZqxeTiEpZrNTOp6XvUzKPXq1eQXoAv7CjKo6N5UVTi60Wu6ki9Oc6fSdX8Rl66sA/s16000/Fashion%20illustrations-by-Brooke%20Hagel-for%20Ralph%20Lauren-influencers.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXUhGcQcp7AjnpqytxTBqkb2wF1o5aRg6DNJz86jxARqyeHmco-zpZWNAJNTVa_Rj9DyNgEIkwkKBS7QcSV_EKOhIts2W8-fvjSaWAGy3ScQDqGM9fUKSZjz91UNCNMFXUvpCwBQ1yG_azjvX6rtLAm88yYip5yXRnz-ZKZCNoEOUJt5NE63Dxbi1Ig/s1382/Custom%20Fashion%20Illustrations-In%20store-By%20Brooke%20Hagel-Ralph%20Lauren-Illustrator.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1382" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXUhGcQcp7AjnpqytxTBqkb2wF1o5aRg6DNJz86jxARqyeHmco-zpZWNAJNTVa_Rj9DyNgEIkwkKBS7QcSV_EKOhIts2W8-fvjSaWAGy3ScQDqGM9fUKSZjz91UNCNMFXUvpCwBQ1yG_azjvX6rtLAm88yYip5yXRnz-ZKZCNoEOUJt5NE63Dxbi1Ig/s16000/Custom%20Fashion%20Illustrations-In%20store-By%20Brooke%20Hagel-Ralph%20Lauren-Illustrator.png" /></a></div>My first time live sketching at the Ralph Lauren mansion was an experience that did not disappoint! I had a wonderful time sketching and meeting an array of Ralph Lauren customers and employees (including the President of RL!) in a stunning setting. The event went so well that they flew me down to Miami about two weeks later to live sketch there for a few days as well as booked me to come back for Mother's Day weekend! <p></p><p>Similar posts to check out: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2017/08/chanel-custom-fashion-illustrations.html" target="_blank">Chanel Custom Fashion Illustrations </a></li><li><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2019/05/ferragamo-fashion-illustration.html" target="_blank">Ferragamo Fashion Illustration Invitations </a></li><li><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2016/06/custom-sketching-for-harry-winston.html" target="_blank">Custom Sketching for Harry Winston</a></li></ul><p></p>Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-13451869783383639002021-11-20T04:57:00.000-05:002021-11-20T04:57:05.921-05:00Holiday Pop-Up at Anthropologie<p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxjFkBfWQxXQ7xaKccWyzG0Q4oB0iFV_zGwGZKO77_M3CMtc1pz1s_5ks7MS606AIqCIuIFexHrsXjR1TQwUPMBp-SxMhFYoQPlFABdIGkIUluRgFj-3NHBYbXhZm8J9a58BmAWYhlneNR/s1920/Untitled_Artwork+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxjFkBfWQxXQ7xaKccWyzG0Q4oB0iFV_zGwGZKO77_M3CMtc1pz1s_5ks7MS606AIqCIuIFexHrsXjR1TQwUPMBp-SxMhFYoQPlFABdIGkIUluRgFj-3NHBYbXhZm8J9a58BmAWYhlneNR/s16000/Untitled_Artwork+2.JPG" /></a><br />I am so excited so be partnering <a href="http://www.anthropologie.com" target="_blank">Anthropologie</a> this year to be hosting my first holiday pop-up shop of the season. I'll be selling my fashion illustration prints, hand painted ornaments, holiday cards, and as a special treat I'll also be hand painting Anthropologie candles with customers names! It's always wonderful to work with a global brand but this one in particular is special, as I've been such a long time loyal customer. (Even my nightstand and a bunch of items here on my desk are Anthro!) I have to say I'm so excited to be working them. It's also only our first event of the season. The next one I can't share just yet, but its even more exciting! Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform is a classic all-American look that
incorporates sustainable materials within each piece,” a press release
from Ralph Lauren read. What it left out was that it incorporated
elements, or better yet accessories and illustrative details we’ve yet
to see from Ralph Lauren for any Olympic Games ever before such as athletes
sporting face masks, and for the first time a press release illustration
incorporating the disabled community with a Paralympian and a
wheelchair as well as a multitude of ethnicities for the croquis. The inclusive nature of the team USA uniform illustrations released by Ralph Lauren
of both opening and closing ceremony looks for 2021 are truly like none
we’ve ever seen before from the brand!

tell (and now I can’t be 100% certain but I’d be willing to bet money on
it) these illustrations also appear to be digital drawings which is
quite the departure for a brand with such a rich history of hand drawn
illustrations behind their designs. (At the end of this post I’ll share
links with examples of older works.) Specifically the opening ceremony illustration,
with the multiple figures, and the way the flag and fabrics are
rendered, appears to me to be evenly filled lines are that are rendered with digital brush strokes. Of course it’s still in the same beautiful
Ralph Lauren illustrative style and well drawn croqui’s that are quality
examples of the brand. But it’s a modern drawing technique, a high tech
fashion illustration version that parallels the high performance gear
and sustainable clothing elements the illustrations are representing. </span></div><span style="font-family: Raleway;">

To my pleasant surprise the series was peppered with Halston fashion illustrations and it got me thinking about Halston Style, an exhibit I went to 4 years ago, in April of 2017 at the <a href="https://nassaumuseum.org/">Nassau County Museum of Art</a>. (Side note: a museum I actually volunteered at as a docent, many moons ago in my high school years!) I've been to countless fashion designer retrospectives throughout the years but this one is engrained in my head, as it had hands down the most fashion illustrations of any I'd ever even been to and illustrated by the likes of Halston, </span><span style="font-family: "Scope One";">Steven Sprouse, </span><span style="font-family: "Scope One";">Joe Eula (Halston Creative Dir. of 10+ years), and Andy Warhol. The collection of illustrations, garments, iconic designs like Jackie Kennedy's inaugural Halston designed pillbox hat (shown below), personal notes and memorabilia from a life long fashion career was curated from Halston's personal archive which he bestowed upon his neice Lesley Frowick with the directive to write a book "because she would have everything she needed to tell his story. She wrote the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/0847843491/">book</a>, after 25 years, but always felt a companion exhibit was necessary to share Halston's style and sensibilities given the rich volumes he left behind." <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhObI-bx-3Ze_dY_OT3YKDngqgiJRYiiVGaegy2lw9aVysS2NT6hZk92pJjJzl_aJilxxx1W_h8G7Nplir5P7ktv6VgDx-pTr7sziMEFMxws4QcfRkeIjT9SLoZc_9mh9baLMv_BH9eh0ol/s1008/Brooke+Hagel_Halston_Hat+Illustrations_Jackie+Kennedy+Hat_Pillbox+Hat_Inauguration+Hat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1008" data-original-width="942" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhObI-bx-3Ze_dY_OT3YKDngqgiJRYiiVGaegy2lw9aVysS2NT6hZk92pJjJzl_aJilxxx1W_h8G7Nplir5P7ktv6VgDx-pTr7sziMEFMxws4QcfRkeIjT9SLoZc_9mh9baLMv_BH9eh0ol/s16000/Brooke+Hagel_Halston_Hat+Illustrations_Jackie+Kennedy+Hat_Pillbox+Hat_Inauguration+Hat.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Halston was "ahead of his time in more ways than one, he considered all body types, his designs flattering all ages and sizes. He recruited plus sized vaudevillian Pat Ast to model and be a member of his entourage. Although he was trained in fashion illustration at the Chicago Art Institute, within a few short years he hired Steven Sprouse as official fashion illustrator. Sprouse worked by his side for a few years before making his own mark on the fashion world. Then came Joe Eula [a featured character in the Netflix series] and fashion illustrator extraordinaire, whose gossamer brush strokes brought Halston's flowing fabrics to life in full color." </div></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhd8AVdb0FtOhIP7NQxg7OepU3RzhTH1U95rrsYbl5zHI1fFvk0A9q_r2jdkgYT1utKa62C9CHnkkjrcUs5MS-6P502po5eL0TWAuRc7etAmEZA3SQtCM_wkFH8hbsDEzRu0W12Kwce6V-/s1943/Brooke+Hagel_Halston+Sketches_Halston+Exhibit_Fashion+Illustration_Halston+Sketches.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1943" data-original-width="936" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhd8AVdb0FtOhIP7NQxg7OepU3RzhTH1U95rrsYbl5zHI1fFvk0A9q_r2jdkgYT1utKa62C9CHnkkjrcUs5MS-6P502po5eL0TWAuRc7etAmEZA3SQtCM_wkFH8hbsDEzRu0W12Kwce6V-/s16000/Brooke+Hagel_Halston+Sketches_Halston+Exhibit_Fashion+Illustration_Halston+Sketches.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As the illustrations are all for Halston they are not signed by the different fashion illustrators that may have penned them, which is typical of any fashion house. But all have a very similar aesthetic: bold confident thick markered lines, filled in with solid washes of color and the occasional pattern. Halston figures are almost always faceless given sometimes a lip and once in a while an eye, but always have a air of personality and elegance to their stance and poses. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtYnAzHxeqUNV2cmfaTSn2gnvn2Maze_MmL08Dsk5d4YVa1Tcd01dYGygeusnsBxJL9eixWijE6zc2H5HNB9O23rLDGQjpu4KLW1CznoJVf4kd6vwMpLC2YUtYkTA0SxtkxTRrmCgj46Zd/s2572/Brooke+Hagel_Halston+Sketches_Halston+Retrospective_Roy+Halston+Illustrations.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1223" data-original-width="2572" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtYnAzHxeqUNV2cmfaTSn2gnvn2Maze_MmL08Dsk5d4YVa1Tcd01dYGygeusnsBxJL9eixWijE6zc2H5HNB9O23rLDGQjpu4KLW1CznoJVf4kd6vwMpLC2YUtYkTA0SxtkxTRrmCgj46Zd/s16000/Brooke+Hagel_Halston+Sketches_Halston+Retrospective_Roy+Halston+Illustrations.jpg" /></a></div></div>The exhibit took up the entire museum, each gallery filled with a different era of Halston's career. His beautifully design garments on mannequins in the centers of the rooms, sketches lining the walls, countless orchids, and timelines of his career and personal notes from the likes of Liza Minnelli, Lee Radziwill, Beverly Johnson and Elizabeth Taylor in the corridors. It was such a treat to revisit my camera roll and this exhibit again. I hope you enjoyed the Halston fashion illustrations I chose to spotlight, because I have to tell you, there were many to choose from! Who knows, maybe the popularity of the series will have them put the exhibit on again! Wouldn't that be amazing. But in case that doesn't happen you could always pick up Lesley's </span><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/0847843491/" style="text-align: left;">book</a><span style="text-align: left;">. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijim6QwOoyNvTSGgjojEZ6bnOaTVtIIcmeSBSwbw0dWT_oYU0EUeMY97G2xbesVI7_8fV95ycBibnYY6yMoipdPpY-Kz_fsYJwkv_QEfZf0ZCHqZ1eUln-QGY17lKJNW62TX5lFdW7Nl5_/s2048/Brooke+Hagel_Haslton+fashion+Illustration_Nassau+County+Museum_Halston+Illustrations.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="980" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijim6QwOoyNvTSGgjojEZ6bnOaTVtIIcmeSBSwbw0dWT_oYU0EUeMY97G2xbesVI7_8fV95ycBibnYY6yMoipdPpY-Kz_fsYJwkv_QEfZf0ZCHqZ1eUln-QGY17lKJNW62TX5lFdW7Nl5_/s16000/Brooke+Hagel_Haslton+fashion+Illustration_Nassau+County+Museum_Halston+Illustrations.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">(Quotes taken from Halston Style exhibition at Nassau County Museum of Art) </span></div></span></div></span></div></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: Scope One;">If you liked this post, you should check out: </span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Scope One;"><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2013/06/punk-chaos-to-couture-at-metropolitan.html">Punk: Chaos to Couture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art </a></span></li><li><span style="font-family: Scope One;"><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2014/05/preview-of-charles-james-beyond-fashion.html">Preview of 'Charles James: Beyond Fashion' Exhibit </a></span></li><li><span style="font-family: Scope One;"><a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2009/09/fashion-week-spring-2010-collections.html">Fashion Week Spring 2010 Collections</a></span></li></ul><p></p>Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-51772100076379771482021-04-22T00:41:00.000-04:002021-04-22T00:41:07.488-04:00Brooke Hagel x Woops! This <a href="http://tinyurl.com/BrookeHagel01" target="_blank">limited edition collection</a> was created especially for Mother's Day with nurturing, spirited moms in mind. We toyed with the idea of using my traditional fashion illustrations, accessories and even florals, but in the end my iconic bunhead silhouettes won out and I'm so pleased we went with them! I think they're the perfect personality-filled people to send to moms, aunts, grandmas or a friend to just say "I'm thinking of you." I'm so excited to take my bunheads on this sweet collaborative journey with Woops! by transforming my fashion figures into mothering figures. I was thinking about the women in our lives who are nurturing, loving and spirited, celebrating the women who have raised, supported, encouraged and loved us through it all. This collection is for each person to thank the special woman in their life. If you look closely at the figures you will you find a pregnant figure, a figure holding a baby, a figure with a child, and of course the free spirited strong women that we all admire. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnTBSV5g1Aj24Ic9PIkluVa0pk51W7L6IennaP1gTeK4Cb_ShuoTch3xs6ZdRoi-mF92nxn7fd8YYSD4mzs-nAAzZW1wGDeRLhDXwhlIF1Tml2TIRZvivrhs_CXwdk36DZ7tyLxX9Q3ZAo/s2048/Brooke+Hagel+x+Woops-Fashion+illustration+macarons-Collaboration.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnTBSV5g1Aj24Ic9PIkluVa0pk51W7L6IennaP1gTeK4Cb_ShuoTch3xs6ZdRoi-mF92nxn7fd8YYSD4mzs-nAAzZW1wGDeRLhDXwhlIF1Tml2TIRZvivrhs_CXwdk36DZ7tyLxX9Q3ZAo/s16000/Brooke+Hagel+x+Woops-Fashion+illustration+macarons-Collaboration.jpg" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">I created three different macaron designs with my bunheads as well as three different box sleeves for you to choose from so theres something to fit everyone. One box is an all over pattern solely of bunheads dancing, prancing and stretching about (see below), another box is solid faint pink and has the bunheads gathered in a frame around my handwritten note saying “Mom, good job. I turned out perfect.” and the third box is also a petal pink with wider open pattern of the bunheads and a quote in the center typed “Aways together, never apart, Maybe in distance but, never in heart.” Which I thought was a beautiful sentiment for all those who can't be with their loved ones, especially at this time, and after this difficult year. All the boxes have my artist statement on the bottom as well as mine and Woops! logos.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM3e_71UVcyvXz1Asfje1uDSFuU_cMZZTzBRk-UJD3LrwwyFG8BTprijY4S071v3nL8-JEy3XI0V8LOLHyNBgZ3IXLDgTvXlrHiXHuWT2ov5Iw-tzIkzneQYzu7ry3FZiPC2lckigJ8s4q/s2048/Brooke+Hagel+Woops-Macaron-fashion+illustration-gift+box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1567" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM3e_71UVcyvXz1Asfje1uDSFuU_cMZZTzBRk-UJD3LrwwyFG8BTprijY4S071v3nL8-JEy3XI0V8LOLHyNBgZ3IXLDgTvXlrHiXHuWT2ov5Iw-tzIkzneQYzu7ry3FZiPC2lckigJ8s4q/s16000/Brooke+Hagel+Woops-Macaron-fashion+illustration-gift+box.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxSwKWDRUyVN6c_xjuAUCBqRDFqvhjuGFAuo_EHDR8sWa93nblMzqxPkBnEBtNvB2UsrCAVk5k6P0jkqO4U4ELNAmixY1SwjbGt5k9UIzTxbNneuBcmirTi36vA5kV_Ntr4IQ-hC7mucgv/s2048/Brooke+Hagel+x+Woops+Macaron+COllaboration-Fashion+Illustration+Macarons.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxSwKWDRUyVN6c_xjuAUCBqRDFqvhjuGFAuo_EHDR8sWa93nblMzqxPkBnEBtNvB2UsrCAVk5k6P0jkqO4U4ELNAmixY1SwjbGt5k9UIzTxbNneuBcmirTi36vA5kV_Ntr4IQ-hC7mucgv/s16000/Brooke+Hagel+x+Woops+Macaron+COllaboration-Fashion+Illustration+Macarons.jpg" /></a></div><p>In addition to designing the macarons and the boxes, I also curated the boxes with my favorite flavors. I've been feeling pretty bad about myself for weeks/months leading up to the end of the year thinking about the lack of brand work, well any work if I'm being honest, that I had this year. Being that I primarily live sketch at events and there has been none for nearly 10 months, its been a tough year. Then I read something that said to think about your small wins and accomplishments because this was a tough year, one certainly like none other and you did it, you had those wins. It was like a mini Oprah-light bulb moment for me because I did have some wins! So without further ado I want to share my wins of 2020: </div></span></div><p></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">At the start of pandemic I felt helpless. I wanted to do something to giveback to the frontline healthcare heroes aside from donate where I could and 7pm clapping out the window. (Which honestly was nothing short of magical the first few weeks or so! It truly felt like the entire city erupted in applause.) So I started <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/our-frontline-figures" target="_blank">Our Frontline Figures</a> and for weeks had my social media followers submit photos of frontline health heroes they knew. Each week I would choose one and live sketch them on Instagram live then send that person their custom illustration as thank for you all that they've done. It was without a doubt the most fulfilling thing I did all year, giving back to those <a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2020/05/frontline-figure-custom-illustration.html" target="_blank">doctors and nurses</a> who have been risking their lives every day. I received the most heartfelt thank you notes, cards and emails from them that continually brought tears to my eyes.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;"><br /></span></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">I got <a href="http://BrookeHagel.com" target="_blank">BrookeHagel.com</a> up and running! This was and still is a huge one for me. I have owned this domain name for probably over ten years without putting anything into it. Last year I finally started the site but was too scared/intimidated to figure out how to design it. But this year I finally took action! Its still by no means perfect, and theres SO much more I need to polish and add but its up and running with multiple pages like a <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/about-me" target="_blank">bio</a>, <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/press" target="_blank">press</a> page, <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/illustrated-books" target="_blank">books</a> I've illustrated page, an <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/frequently-asked-questions" target="_blank">FAQ</a> page, a page with different ways to <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/shop" target="_blank">shop</a> my work, which hopefully next year you'll be able to do directly on the site! Its getting there. And I'm proud of myself for finally making it happen because boy did I procrastinate this one! </span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;"><br /></span></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">Shortly after starting my website I also finally started my <a href="https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5ef776a56d32be002638c620" target="_blank">newsletter</a>! Similar to the site, this is something I've wanted to do yearsss. As long as I've been blogging really. (which is almost 12 years!) And this year I made it happen and I'm SO proud of it! The overall look and feel reflects my brand vibe and aesthetic beautifully and I'm finally able to share directly with you guys straight to your inboxes! Which feels more intimate and special. You can <a href="https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5ef776a56d32be002638c620" target="_blank">subscribe here</a> if you'd like to join in! </span></li></ul><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg79_0gI8Pn9XHQ-IwHl9_4_ZXZzFaizTbIR_Kw1fxTddWIt7R2S3Abp6WmtCzCRPrCj_ct4tut5KGArMgFSchcYaCJu3vvNx06EY-gs1vO_NOLJa3B93r5fi8fyGtErwZIAxQoddIsjix4/s1936/FabulousDoodles-Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustration+Ornaments-Lilac+Siamese.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1936" data-original-width="1936" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg79_0gI8Pn9XHQ-IwHl9_4_ZXZzFaizTbIR_Kw1fxTddWIt7R2S3Abp6WmtCzCRPrCj_ct4tut5KGArMgFSchcYaCJu3vvNx06EY-gs1vO_NOLJa3B93r5fi8fyGtErwZIAxQoddIsjix4/s16000/FabulousDoodles-Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustration+Ornaments-Lilac+Siamese.png" /></a></div></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">I had my first ever collection launch this year! In the past I've always just created individual products or prints, put them the shop and announced it. But this year I assembled a proper collection, marketed it and launched it all at one time, the <a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2020/12/hand-painted-bunhead-ornaments.html" target="_blank">Bunhead Ornament Collection</a>. I'm so proud of how my little bunheads turned out. They're meticulously hand painted on handmade ceramic pieces, hung from raw silk ribbon and simply beautiful. A couple sold immediately upon the launch which was wonderful! Not all have sold out, but thats okay, as I can just hold onto them for next year as I plan to do a second collection in 2021.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;"><br /></span></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">This last one is not exactly (not at all) a work win, but its a life win, and one I think is worth the share because who knows who will read it and perhaps benefit from it. In August I rescued a cat and she's completely changed my life. At the risk of sounding like a witch here I was just never a animal lover. Never one of those people who ran to pet peoples dogs or ogled over a cat but this kitty has completely transformed me. I named her Pearl, because she's white (well she was, now she's turning a bit gray) and because I'm a pearl lover and love that its a granny name. I can't put into words how nice it is to have this cutie to play with, cuddle with and laugh at--because sometimes she's hilarious! She's completely taken me out of my what seems like years long funk. (without going to deep here.) Yes I have to feed her and change her litter, which I was hesitant about beforehand, but I love her so much that its just not so bad. I go out and I miss her! I even got a "Pearl cam" to spy on her! I've become one of those people!! And of course, if you know me, I've made <a href="http://www.instagram.com/pearl.in.newyork" target="_blank">her an Instagram</a>, which you should all follow! The entire time I've been writing this post she's been curled up in my lap and I couldn't imagine my apartment or life without her in it anymore. My little Pearl girl has truly been a game changer and made 2020 and quarentine not so bad. </span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: Nanum Myeongjo;">I hope you enjoyed reading about my small wins and maybe they inspired you in some way. I'd love to hear about your wins in the comments! Any pandemic pet adoptions? Product launches? Sign up for any classes or make it through a big book you didnt think you could tackle? I'm all about the small wins! Cheers everyone. I hope you have a happy and healthy new year and hopefully we'll all be celebrating small and big wins in 2021! </span></div><p></p>Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-67010757871264972572020-12-24T18:11:00.003-05:002020-12-24T18:11:31.399-05:00Hand Painted Bunhead Ornaments<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgirqsHCnbh5EAjDVCqgkjICdG0pley_QcXeVZHkRFNUXJcU-VHqi4tGoUnpJiSoKA5acXjEOUF3e8ZhOAWA_suKV9ShjeFvXyNt-ix1hrSL-REYj2edERsasTDReODSqeKt3quEenLG4Dm/s1449/Bunhead+ornaments-fashion+illustration+ornaments-hanpainted-brooke+hagel-fashion+figures.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1449" data-original-width="864" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgirqsHCnbh5EAjDVCqgkjICdG0pley_QcXeVZHkRFNUXJcU-VHqi4tGoUnpJiSoKA5acXjEOUF3e8ZhOAWA_suKV9ShjeFvXyNt-ix1hrSL-REYj2edERsasTDReODSqeKt3quEenLG4Dm/s16000/Bunhead+ornaments-fashion+illustration+ornaments-hanpainted-brooke+hagel-fashion+figures.png" /></a></div>This holiday season I launched a hand painted bunhead ornament collection in the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/brooklit/?section_id=6531109" target="_blank">shop</a> and it occurred to me this morning, on Christmas Eve that I never featured them here on Fabulous Doodles! So in the spirit of the holiday I wanted to bring my little ladies to the blog. I've been drawing and painting tiny croquis (fashion figures) with buns atop their heads since I was in grade school. I even had my first art show at around 15 years old at a coffee house in my Long Island town featuring a small collection of a them. But this is the first time I've ever adorned them on ornaments. If you're familiar with my work or follow me on the <a data-custom="link" href="https://www.instagram.com/brookehagel/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #b8b8b8; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-decoration-line: none;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;">gram</span></a><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> I'm sure you've seen the bunheads pop up in my IG stories, drawn in digital videos and occasionally sketched over photos but painted onto ceramics is a first!</span><p></p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-block: 0px; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhePetW90KNP9LedvVnfFojuMT-CKCImwXT_-2ZpJdHd-DRJYbZ70omm2F4OWN_Ax7PTNA50dtZ3yVBHuxVwDZJdCn03XGRpCwa21z56U346KXJYpakKR-TuUtzCdbAZEMSYVW8kSgTXBv2/s1489/Bunhead+ornaments-fashion+illustration+ornaments-hanpainted-brooke+hagel-fashion+figures-paint+palette-fashion+illustrator.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1489" data-original-width="864" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhePetW90KNP9LedvVnfFojuMT-CKCImwXT_-2ZpJdHd-DRJYbZ70omm2F4OWN_Ax7PTNA50dtZ3yVBHuxVwDZJdCn03XGRpCwa21z56U346KXJYpakKR-TuUtzCdbAZEMSYVW8kSgTXBv2/s16000/Bunhead+ornaments-fashion+illustration+ornaments-hanpainted-brooke+hagel-fashion+figures-paint+palette-fashion+illustrator.png" /></a></div>I had the ceramic ornaments handmade from a fellow Etsy artist out west and I am so pleased with the results! I wanted the pieces to be fully handcrafted and not store bought or from a mold. One of my favorite features of them is actually the back, where you can see the handmade touch in the swirl of the clay and my signature. (You can see details of the back in the listing detail photos!) I grew up with parents who were both potters so I have a thing for ceramics.<p></p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-block: 0px; margin: 0px;"> </p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-block: 0px; margin: 0px;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;">I used my tiniest brush for these little ladies, as their hands, feet and limbs are dainty and the little brush almost acts like a pen tip capturing the finest details. I also wanted as many ladies on each ornaments as I could. I've been documenting the ornament painting process on my Instagram stories and I saved them all the highlighted album titled </span><a data-custom="link" href="https://www.instagram.com/brookehagel/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #b8b8b8; text-decoration-line: none;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;">Ornaments</span></a><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;"> if you're interested and want to see the ornaments take shape. I hope my little beauties bring good vibes to your Christmas trees! There are still a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/brooklit/?section_id=6531109" target="_blank">couple left</a> for you late shoppers. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!...And to those who don't the ornament is still a nice decorative piece for the home. I'm one of them, and I have one hanging on my office mood board!</span></p>Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-78351549910253142682020-12-14T01:22:00.001-05:002020-12-14T01:26:31.805-05:00Fashion Illustration Gift Guide<span style="font-family: Assistant;">As a Fashion Illustrator who's always creating and working with different clients and brands, I'm continually presented with new ways for fashion illustration to be enjoyed. Eleven years ago I started this fashion illustration blog, Fabulous Doodles along with my Etsy shop <a href="https://www.blogger.com/u/1/www.brooklit.etsy.com" target="_blank">Brooklit</a> followed by <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/brooklitbride" target="_blank">Brooklit Bride</a>. I remember being excited but nervous about putting my work out there for the world to see. I also recall thinking it would be a side job (laughable now!) that fingers crossed could possibly lead to more. Something I'd write once in a while, get commissions from here and there, because that would be nice and who knows, I'd see where it went. What did I know for sure was that fashion illustration was my passion and sitting at a desk in a corporate office from 9 to 5 as I had been was not. (Although I was a Brand Designer for Hearst Magazines, so I did style, shop and design photoshoots and get be creative. It's not like I was selling insurance in my former career.) But I digress.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The day I launched a coworker featured me and my work on her blog, which immediately lead to multiple blog features, some of which were by very big and well known names in blogsphere at the time. Not soon after came my first my first commission for a <a href="https://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2009/06/its-about-time-x.html" target="_blank">global brand</a> and then my first feature in a <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5aea0ad42714e567f0fc4a61/t/5e826b33f58ede602eda7e29/1585605427635/Brooke+Hagel-NJ+Bride-Bridal+Illustrator-Press-Fashion+Illustrator.jpg" target="_blank">magazine</a>. Every article, job and write up was so exciting! It felt electric. I remember running to my coworkers desk to tell her anytime an email came in with a fashion illustration inquiry. Not soon thereafter though I lost my job during the recession. I remember crying to a friend that afternoon, not knowing what I was going to do because I'd just resigned the lease on my Manhattan apartment for two more years so the option of even moving home was out...So I kept blogging and following my passion but in those first years it was tough. I collected unemployment, (which back then was a whopping $485 a week I believe) I took odd jobs and even though I was well past my teen years I was back to babysitting again because you gotta do what you gotta do to the pay the rent and bills. But through it all I kept the blog and my Etsy shop going. And I kept taking commissions and promoting my work. Because as I always tell aspiring illustrators, you need to be consistent and passionate about promoting your work because no one else is going to do it for you, especially in the beginning. </div>

I began to gain more name recognition, clients and my career took off once I began regularly illustrating for Vogue. Its honestly still surreal to me, being a lover of fashion my whole life that I get to type that sentence. But it is, and it was. I've told this story countless times before but being a key part of my journey I certainly can't leave out here, so here it goes. I was blogging, taking commissions and going about life when a fashion PR girl reached out to me to live sketch her midsummer night soiree for fashion bloggers. I said no. This was something I was asked to do frequently but always turned down. I hated it when people watched me sketch, I didn't draw fast and the whole thing sounded overwhelming. Well she was very persistent and kept asking and I eventually gave in and decided to just try it. To my surprise it went really well and I wrote a blog post about it. The very next day I had an email from Vogue's head of events inquiring about my event sketching services! We set up a meeting and within a few days I was sitting in the Vogue lobby with my portfolio fully about to pass out. The rest is history. She hired me for her <a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2012/09/party-guest-fashion-illustrations-for.html" target="_blank">event</a> and it was the first of many, many events I've worked on with Vogue over the past 8 years. They've sent me to on sketching tours of the country for 3 or 4 consecutive years and have collaborated with brands such as Clinique, Dior, Gap, La Mer, and Viktor & Rolf. Having Vogue as a client opened the doors to meeting many other designers and brands as has just being a guest a Vogue events and meeting future potential clients in person, when Voguers introduce me as their illustrator! Since Vogue I now also work with Burberry, Chanel, Cartier, Salvatore Ferragamo, Harry Winston, Pierrier-Jouet and Mindy Wiess Events to name a few.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm sharing all this now is because its a difficult time once again with this pandemic and the economic fallout for many including me and my business which is primarily doing live events--which have obviously have all been canceled in the last 6 months and counting. I'm trying to remain positive though and taking solace in knowing I've gotten through tough times in the past and I'll get through it again. I'm also trying to focus on the areas of my business that are not event based, pivot my efforts and and work on expanding my website, rebranding, and creating a new collection of work. I hope sharing my journey was insightful and maybe even helped you in rethinking your own. You never know how saying yes to one event, writing one blog post or taking one meeting could be launching pad of your career. Do you have any questions? Let me know in the comments below! And be sure and check out my new <a href="https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5ef776a56d32be002638c620" target="_blank">newsletter</a> so you don't miss any of the new things I'm working on!</div>

The people on the front lines of the pandemic who are risking their lives every single day to keep us safe. I've been giving what I can personally, and now doing my part professionally. I launched my first Instagram live series titled <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/our-frontline-figures" target="_blank">Our Frontline Figures</a> where for six weeks I created custom illustrations of our healthcare heroes inspired by photos submitted by their friends and families.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: benton-sans; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.48px; margin-bottom: 1.6em; margin-top: 1.25em; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw0ZaY33Ko_0DopBEgI1FF1sBW1sWYTu3CLbOP8zdnuZg3ovoiDhgO1i2Kg67lDM9-WqBT8WLnxPgD0WUah76uK90WhoVGb88MWo_8RuKiOXphST2cGbQQvb70srKDqHTBmiOAx18NJL5i/s3912/Brooke+Hagel-Custom+Illustration-Frontline+Figures-Healthcare+Heroes-Custom+Sketch-Nurse+copy+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3912" data-original-width="3024" height="781" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw0ZaY33Ko_0DopBEgI1FF1sBW1sWYTu3CLbOP8zdnuZg3ovoiDhgO1i2Kg67lDM9-WqBT8WLnxPgD0WUah76uK90WhoVGb88MWo_8RuKiOXphST2cGbQQvb70srKDqHTBmiOAx18NJL5i/w604-h781/Brooke+Hagel-Custom+Illustration-Frontline+Figures-Healthcare+Heroes-Custom+Sketch-Nurse+copy+copy.jpg" width="604" /></a></div>Every week my community joined me on Instagram live as I walked them through the custom illustration process. I taught how my process works every step of the way, people followed along and created their own custom sketches of a healthcare hero in their life and got to ask questions throughout. Throughout the six weeks </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;">I received submissions of healthcare heroes from across the country (and people tuned to learn to draw from around the globe!) winners were chosen at random. We had an ER nurse, a Pulmonary Doctor, two Manhattan based Covid nurses, a newly engaged nurse from Georgia and a New Jersey nurse who actually hosted a socially distanced IG live margarita viewing party on her front lawn because she was so excited about being chosen. The messages of gratitude from these heroes who are saving lives and risking their own health everyday continually moved me to tears. </span></div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: benton-sans; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.48px; margin-bottom: 1.6em; margin-top: 1.25em; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglMHdy7LM0Hdd3z6liex94MnojF-0YPOpcn2CUg2nE4Zrz5HeoQX3ofUuF9q3ls696QQkllhOJQrcTdWgFtbnoGEBQ5GDtNISeM3YBuUX76oGe9qX3uNQipxgrcw9Wi503u337MlpYFOu3/s3784/Custom+Fashion+illustration-Brooke+Hagel-Frontline+Figure-Healthcare+Hero-Fashion+Sketch-Our+Frontline+Figures+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3784" data-original-width="3451" height="781" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglMHdy7LM0Hdd3z6liex94MnojF-0YPOpcn2CUg2nE4Zrz5HeoQX3ofUuF9q3ls696QQkllhOJQrcTdWgFtbnoGEBQ5GDtNISeM3YBuUX76oGe9qX3uNQipxgrcw9Wi503u337MlpYFOu3/w713-h781/Custom+Fashion+illustration-Brooke+Hagel-Frontline+Figure-Healthcare+Hero-Fashion+Sketch-Our+Frontline+Figures+copy.jpg" width="713" /></a></div>As many of us do, I have a tendency to be my own worst critic and occasionally devalue myself and my talent. But this global pandemic has made me thankful for my talent and the talent and work of other artists in my community. Now more than ever, with everyone quarentined and isolated at home, people have been turning to the art and entertainment industries. I'm in a membership group for artists and <span style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;">another artist in the community </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;">recently commented on Facebook that </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;">"artist are barometers and scribes of society and the times we live in." (</span><a href="https://www.darcygoedecke.com/" style="letter-spacing: 0.48px;" target="_blank">Darcy Goedecke</a>) I think we'll look back on 2020 and in addition to it being a history making year it will also be a pivotal moment in art. That being said, I'm excited to say theres more to come from me soon and Our Frontline Figure series was only the first creative creation series. </div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: benton-sans; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.48px; margin-bottom: 1.6em; margin-top: 1.25em; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;">Thank you for all the submissions and thank you to all the amazing Healthcare Heroes who participated every week and more importantly thank you for all that you to do save lives everyday during this global pandemic. You're truly an inspiration. </div>

Today I had a meeting about sketching for a bridal shower and it got me thinking that its been a while since I shared a bridal shower I've live sketched here on Fabulous Doodles. I've sketched custom illustrations at countless private events but this pink bridal shower stands out as one of my favorites. Custom illustrating this bride-to-be, and her sisters in their custom made ensembles was a delight. The party was in the backyard of a Long Island estate and I live sketched the guests custom illustrations in a tent poolside while guests mingled about. It was a fun fete where nearly all the illustrations were in my favorite color, pink, since unbeknownst to me there was a pink dress code!<br />

The bridal shower meeting I had today was primarily about doing illustrations of the bride-to-be before the shower so the illustration could be used throughout the Soho party as shower decor. I'm so looking forward to seeing this one come to fruition. Its always exciting to see what event planners create with my sketches! Did you see <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BqYlZyinDE_/" target="_blank">this jaw dropping party</a> that Mindy Weiss threw for NBA star Russel Westbrook by blowing up and repeating my one custom sketch?! If you're interested in commissioning a custom sketch for your own future event or would like rates on having me live sketch at your private party you can email me at FabulousDoodles@gmail.com.<br />

<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">
Fashion illustrators, like any other artist can face creative road blocks and ruts so I thought I'd share my top three ways to find inspiration when faced with a creative block and the dreaded blank page. <br />
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcmV19cFK-4VhlUD4r7yvx3KozgDTj8qPcJjZuCtuhzs9cDrmGZs5HGAzehKV4VYkqWFGHb6E8lfFwsvy2ZdT7HIFfbkEDfXvPd9XhohUeQW80eMoU5BnudtUbelS3_xSM95y2fkbA_Om3/s1600/MetSketch-BrookeHagel-Guo+Pei-Fashion+Ilustration-FabulousDoodles-Brooklit-LiveArt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1336" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcmV19cFK-4VhlUD4r7yvx3KozgDTj8qPcJjZuCtuhzs9cDrmGZs5HGAzehKV4VYkqWFGHb6E8lfFwsvy2ZdT7HIFfbkEDfXvPd9XhohUeQW80eMoU5BnudtUbelS3_xSM95y2fkbA_Om3/s1600/MetSketch-BrookeHagel-Guo+Pei-Fashion+Ilustration-FabulousDoodles-Brooklit-LiveArt.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #222222;">(One of my Met sketches inspired by Guo Pei gown at "China: Through the Looking Glass") </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">
1. Go to a museum or gallery. Whether you have time for the whole museum or just one wing or exhibition, go. You never know how discovering a new artist or even seeing an old master will get your creative juices flowing. Bring a sketch pad, snap some photos (if that's allowed) or simply stroll the galleries and see what you find. I've been visiting the impressionist wing of The Met pretty religiously since I was about 14. I can’t visit the museum without popping in to see my old friends Monet, Cezanne, and van Gogh and without fail every visit I find a new gem. A new favorite painting, a new favorite spot that day, a new detail of a painting I never noticed before, or a combination of colors that strikes me that given day. If its photography that inspires you go see a fashion photography exhibit. If its vintage fashion, check out the Costume Institute. Or just gallery hop and see what you find and where the day takes you. A clear mind and an open afternoon is sometimes just what the doctor ordered sort of speak.<br />
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo3veE7o6JR3OqnmerzuMs-se9RK3aoxGSy_-lyr9OgLONOAxU49JR1OvgZUZhdWcxCQ-dldtAiIV8MpLkdOwQ9WJsTAqD9Y6EOdcwXNMfCo8K_rJZ5t0nvKajKhInBeqqb3ERonlovsiE/s1600/BrookeHagel-Fashion+Illustrator-Fashion+Illustration-92Y-Classroom-Art+class-fashion+sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo3veE7o6JR3OqnmerzuMs-se9RK3aoxGSy_-lyr9OgLONOAxU49JR1OvgZUZhdWcxCQ-dldtAiIV8MpLkdOwQ9WJsTAqD9Y6EOdcwXNMfCo8K_rJZ5t0nvKajKhInBeqqb3ERonlovsiE/s1600/BrookeHagel-Fashion+Illustrator-Fashion+Illustration-92Y-Classroom-Art+class-fashion+sketch.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #222222; font-size: small; text-align: start;">(92nd Street Y)</span><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">
2. Take a class. This is one that, similar to a museum is probably easier in a city but if you look I’m sure you can find one at your local collage, art shop, or community center. If you’ve been wanting to learn more about portrait drawing, figures, watercolors, or fashion illustration, there’s a class for it. And if committing to an entire class is too intimidating then you may want to consider a workshop which is usually only one or two days. In the past I taught a few fashion illustration classes but I’ve actually been thinking about offering a workshop in the new year. (<a href="https://www.blogger.com/%3Cscript%20type=%22text/javascript%22%20src=%22//downloads.mailchimp.com/js/signup-forms/popup/unique-methods/embed.js%22%20data-dojo-config=%22usePlainJson:%20true,%20isDebug:%20false%22%3E%3C/script%3E%3Cscript%20type=%22text/javascript%22%3Ewindow.dojoRequire([%22mojo/signup-forms/Loader%22],%20function(L)%20%7B%20L.start(%7B%22baseUrl%22:%22mc.us4.list-manage.com%22,%22uuid%22:%220ac97722106e064a20185ce04%22,%22lid%22:%22e43d9adca3%22,%22uniqueMethods%22:true%7D)%20%7D)%3C/script%3E" target="_blank">Click here</a> if you’d like to add your name to a waitlist for info when it’s available.) The older we get the more distance grows between us and our school days so it can feel slightly uncomfortable taking the plunge but it's so nice learn something new and immerse yourself in learning and expanding your mind and creativity. Its also nice to meet to new people with similar interests.<br />
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">
3. See a period movie. Once in a while epic period piece film comes along that makes its mark on pop culture. These type of films historically can also be quite inspirational to fashion design. Two examples that come to mind immediately, although I’m sure if I gave it some more thought I could write a blog post on this topic alone, is in 2005 when Ralph Lauren showed his Aviator collection inspired by seeing the film The Aviator. A second example that stands out in my fashion minded brain is in 1998 when the J. Peterman catalogue offered early 1900's beaded gowns inspired by Titanic. I vividly remember looking at those drawings (<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199354720994477251/" target="_blank">remember the catalogue was all sketches!</a>) and wishing the replica of Roses dress was within my budget for a prom dress! Unfortunately it was not, at $2000 for the replica and $35,000 for the original my babysitting money certainly didn't cover that.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">

Ten years ago today I hit publish on my very <a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2009/05/scaryfirst-blog-post.html" target="_blank">first blog post</a> here on Fabulous Doodles! I had no idea back in 2009 the doors that this blog would open for me and the fashion illustration career I would build with this blog at its roots. I realize I sound corny and sentimental here but I can't help it. I'm actually getting choked up sitting here thinking about where I was when I started and where I am now, both physically and in my career. I started Fabulous Doodles because I was working as designer in corporate America and I published the first post sitting at that very corporate desk at lunch. Although it was a creative job and related to my field of interest it was corporate America. I hated the people I was working under, the 9-to-5 lifestyle, the corporate environment, and I really missed illustrating so I began to draw again. At the encouragement of friends I started blogging to share my sketches as well as feature designer sketches and work I found inspiring. I thought it could be a good creative outlet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSEh7E75k143-x2sermtRY4DRgs-IXNygTd4WEb_5jKNWDIcEliLSPaglLFicgn__tQtZYAtRA714q3ZrVObCkkNA4WlSylkehvqZXpFv_43WEDJ7MzVfv9zBfFLgf8F1ByOuDELa6VYiJ/s1600/Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustrator-Fabulous+Doodles-Fashion+Illustration+Blog-Illustration+Blogger-Brooklit.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSEh7E75k143-x2sermtRY4DRgs-IXNygTd4WEb_5jKNWDIcEliLSPaglLFicgn__tQtZYAtRA714q3ZrVObCkkNA4WlSylkehvqZXpFv_43WEDJ7MzVfv9zBfFLgf8F1ByOuDELa6VYiJ/s1600/Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustrator-Fabulous+Doodles-Fashion+Illustration+Blog-Illustration+Blogger-Brooklit.png" /></a></div>
Jump ahead ten years and now instead of sitting at a corporate desk "doodling" I've built a fashion illustration portfolio and website (<a href="http://brookehagel.com/">BrookeHagel.com</a>) with a <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/clients" target="_blank">dream list of luxury clients</a> in the fashion industry I've illustrated for including Burberry, Chanel, Dior, Ferragamo and Vogue. I used to have "illustrate a book" on my bucket list and over the past ten years, due to this blog, I now have more than twenty <a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/illustrated-books" target="_blank">books</a> under my belt. Its surreal to me looking at that "<a href="https://www.brookehagel.com/illustrated-books" target="_blank">shop books</a>" page of my site! And to top it off I'm writing this post from my new home office/studio in an apartment I love.<br />

It wasn't always easy. It's not like the blog was a huge success from the start and I just up and quit my 9-to-5. (As you probably guessed if you took a look at that first post!) In actuality I lost my job in the recession. Promptly freaked out, didn't know how I was going to pay the rent. I took odd jobs, babysat, did what came my way but I kept blogging and the fashion illustration opportunities kept coming. Until eventually I no longer needed the odd jobs. It turned out that my corporate 9-to-5 was my last full-time job working for someone else and I've been working for myself ever since. The first few years it was rough and even the middle years I wasn't always comfortable with the freelance life of quiet-slow summers where not much or no work came in and insane holiday months but I've learned how to ride the freelance wave sort of speak and I'm okay with it now. I've learned to save, to budget and to manage my time and fluctuating income.<br />

Theres a lot more to learn and a lot more I want to accomplish, more clients I'd like to work with and continue to work with, more products I'd like to see my work on, and more industries I'd like to have the opportunities to collaborate with. I'd also love to see my social media reach grow, become "verified" on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/brooklit/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, a featured grammer, and hit six figure digit follower counts but thats an ongoing struggle. Some people lucked out and blew up at the beginning, were featured early on, or just really know how to play that game. For me it's a struggle but I'm trying. Opening up and sharing is hard. Its hard to put yourself out there to strangers and share photos of yourself (like I am here) and videos. To be vulnerable, and authentic and not curate and perfect every post before sharing it. I know thats what people relate to and connect with but its hard for me. Its something I need to work on. Anyway, I digress. Today's a celebration. Ten years of Fabulous Doodles! Ten years of building my business and working for myself! I have a bottle of Perrier-Jouet champagne I've been saving from working on a project with and I think its time I popped that bottle, poured myself a glass and celebrated. And if you know me, there might just be a piece of cake with it! Cheers to you, my Fabulous Doodles readers!Brooke Hagelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04222808025943791653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212695669023768815.post-65569449448476069972019-05-21T12:37:00.000-04:002019-05-21T12:37:07.508-04:00Ferragamo Fashion Illustration Invitations<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Custom fashion event invitations have always been a part of my business but over the past year and a half or so <a href="https://www.ferragamo.com/shop/us/en" target="_blank">Salvatore Ferragamo</a> has become one of my best clients and for them I've drawn many. Rarely does a major holiday pass where I'm not hired to sketch for Ferragamo and with that often comes illustrating a new custom event invitation. Since we've done quite a few now I thought it would be nice to take a look back and feature some of my favorites here on Fabulous Doodles. Each illustration is inspired by a look from the current seasons runway collection that the corporate team sends along. Occasionally the look is shown on a model but sometimes it is sent to me as isolated pieces photographed individually. I then interpret the pieces into a stylized sketch and photograph the sketch on my desktop for the Ferragamo design team to use on the invite layout for an designer studio vibe.<br />

Its been great to have these sketches and invitations both to share on social media with my followers to let people know of the upcoming events, as well as to have the sketches to serve as examples beside me framed at the events as a sample of what it is I am there doing. I always have framed samples at my live-sketching events but this way it is 100% on-brand and representing the most recent Ferragamo collection.<br />

A few weeks back my friends at Vogue called to ask me to live sketch a party up in their offices. Now I've worked with Vogue countless times throughout the years illustrating events for their clients and partners but this time, sketching in Vogue's very own office, was a first!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwSFA4S9rNDOrYASpS5kLdKMWVDbWErG0AtPQUFPSYJS0RMjN8xTzhXrCGyagAGIVWzqvSqfXGo8LlpCLVCyJTQ1Bf47933jdqnq5iiqpeubdbalaTCxifRcj9bh7pLvaPWg4Ek1gqYD64/s1600/Custom+Fashion+Illustration-Cara+Crowley-Vogue+Editor-by-Fashion+Illustrator-Brooke+Hagel-Live+Sketching.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="906" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwSFA4S9rNDOrYASpS5kLdKMWVDbWErG0AtPQUFPSYJS0RMjN8xTzhXrCGyagAGIVWzqvSqfXGo8LlpCLVCyJTQ1Bf47933jdqnq5iiqpeubdbalaTCxifRcj9bh7pLvaPWg4Ek1gqYD64/s1600/Custom+Fashion+Illustration-Cara+Crowley-Vogue+Editor-by-Fashion+Illustrator-Brooke+Hagel-Live+Sketching.png" /></a></div>
Throughout the years I've been to Vogue's office many times, the first visit with shaking hands and my portfolio which I recounted in <a href="http://fabulousdoodles.blogspot.com/2013/05/fabulous-doodles-4th-blogiversary.html" target="_blank">this post</a> you may remember where I actually thought I was going to pass out in the lobby. But in all the years I've been working with my Vogue friends this was actually the first time I was asked to come to Vogue with all supplies and illustrate right there, live, in the Vogue office. And I have to admit it I was a little more nervous than my norm these days, but I shook it off pretty quickly once I was with the ladies and started sketching.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXXyWspaeS7Z-n0Dx9REI0oLNAJKjJiAK_mJECVmM3LV7xwoiDWp1Fkc6plW_CB6ESQkDgNgfZ5mjdPcCUUWGPVXF6CoyJgib7dKazca86tFhdvdR49VIG9dKczYTxfz8NVsO_22opCppx/s1600/Fashion+Illustrator-Brooke+Hagel-Custom+Illustrations-Vogue+fashion+Illustrator-live+sketching.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXXyWspaeS7Z-n0Dx9REI0oLNAJKjJiAK_mJECVmM3LV7xwoiDWp1Fkc6plW_CB6ESQkDgNgfZ5mjdPcCUUWGPVXF6CoyJgib7dKazca86tFhdvdR49VIG9dKczYTxfz8NVsO_22opCppx/s1600/Fashion+Illustrator-Brooke+Hagel-Custom+Illustrations-Vogue+fashion+Illustrator-live+sketching.png" /></a></div>
The party was a surprise for one of the Vogue staffers and having me there to live sketch was part of the surprise. Throughout the party I live-sketched everyone in their fabulous work wear. Normally one wouldn't think of an office party as a place to score sketch worthy looks but obviously the Vogue office was a sketching goldmine of one chic look after the next!<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: #222222;">House of Cards has long been the dramatic home to one of the best dressed</span><span style="color: #222222;"> characters to grace the small screen, Robin Wright as Claire Underwood. </span></span><span style="color: #222222;">Last month I had the opportunity to preview the sixth and final season of House of Cards not once, but twice! As well as attend talks at the <a href="https://www.92y.org/" style="color: #1155cc;">92nd Street Y</a> and <a href="https://www.the-wing.com/" style="color: #1155cc;">The Wing</a> with Wright, Michal Kelly, show-runner Melissa James and producer Frank Pugliese, pulling back the curtain as to what goes into making this monumental series. Wright's character dons the most pristine wardrobe that is not only tailored to perfection but also magnifies the characters flawless facade. I had the opportunity to ask some burning wardrobe questions about her flawless House of Cards wardrobe, designed by Kemala Harris, who as Melissa James says has “such an eye for not only a flawless wardrobe but such an understanding of character...with such attention to detail. So many of the dresses and stuff she’s [Claire]</span></span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> wearing, she wears with presidential cufflinks, which was entirely Kamala’s idea."</span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> She wanted to adapt the masculinity of presidents, and incorporate it into Claire's wardrobe. A wardrobe which is made up entirely of designer pieces that are altered and customized to strategically masculine-ize the character. Robin said jokingly, but not, that one of the things she's going to miss most from the show are the Christian Louboutins and Prada dresses. </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I sketched the character of Claire Underwood (shown above) in the uniform-esque suit she wears through much of episode one of season six. Even before the cast and crew talks as I watched the episode I was struck </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">by how militaristic and commanding her bespoke suit was with its gold notions, taut fit, and modest cut. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir5QL91AxarJ46oneXITil57xDrpDJdLzqJ3RLnDJAVthoviVcwrO0I7oHxvC9Hpvrwt8Ik9GY50l6QPkpAUY4SHHML701mDHVbcvKIj89giTapF26CWrBCuL-IofVlbbFlhs_NxaTReeQ/s1600/Robin+Wright+Illustration-Claire+Underwood-House+of+Cards-by-Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustrator.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="771" data-original-width="720" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir5QL91AxarJ46oneXITil57xDrpDJdLzqJ3RLnDJAVthoviVcwrO0I7oHxvC9Hpvrwt8Ik9GY50l6QPkpAUY4SHHML701mDHVbcvKIj89giTapF26CWrBCuL-IofVlbbFlhs_NxaTReeQ/s1600/Robin+Wright+Illustration-Claire+Underwood-House+of+Cards-by-Brooke+Hagel-Fashion+Illustrator.png" /></a></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Season 6 is quite a change from sexy styling of season 5, which I'd also roughly sketched about two years ago (shown above.) I can't wait for what the rest of this final season has in store for us wardrobe wise and in plot twists, with the countries first female President. Robin said "its gonna shock the shit out of you basically!" You can watch the whole 92Y talk (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ3G1LVcFow" target="_blank">here on YouTube</a>) to hear for yourself all the juicy details. If you do watch, (and this is slightly embarrassing but I'm clearly in awe of Robin and if you've come this far in the post perhaps you are as well.) anytime she looks down to the audience she was making eye contact with me! My friend and I were front row center and concluded that the guests on the stage couldn't see too far into the audience with intense spotlights on them so whenever she'd look down and out at the audience it was right as us! We kept elbowing each other in excitement and the entire cab ride home across town we discussed how charismatic and glowingly beautiful Robin Wright was. It was kind of hilarious that as two grown and heterosexual women we were completely fangirling out!</span></div>
