Shiseido Beauty Illustrations

I teamed up with Shiseido to create custom illustrations for "Light My Story," Shiseido's social media campaign. The concept was over a few months to share the Shiseido story through illustrations, photos and art by various luminaries and in return have people share moments from their lives, and they're stories. Shiseido is 140 year old company, with quite a rich history and scope. The theme of the illustrations I was asked to create were: behind the scenes of New York Fashion Week (show above,) a woman accessorizing with her pearls and pearl infused face cream, a chemist mixing new products, and a woman being pampered with a Shiseido facial.
The intention behind the woman depicted within this set of illustrations was to have her ethnicity appear to be half Caucasian and half Japanese as Shisedio is a Japanese brand rich in Japanese traditions. She's to reflect a strong, healthy, traditional and beautiful woman, not overly trendy or made up. I even had to remove some accessories and makeup from the sketches throughout the sketch phase of the custom illustration process.
Over the past few weeks these illustrations have been shared by Shiseido and today was the final one, the chemist (shown below.) It was a unique project to work on and I really enjoyed learning about their brand and trying some of their incredible products. I now use one daily actually, the Power Infusing Concentrate Serum. Its one step in the many steps of the Shiseido facial process (shown above,) which layers products and steps similar to a Japanese tea ceremony.
Hope you enjoyed these beauty illustrations as much as I enjoyed illustrating them. For similar posts you may have missed check out:

Stylus Sketching with Samsung & Macys

Today I'm sharing a few sketches I drew with Samsung's latest Galaxy tablet and stylus. I was asked to live-sketch at Macy's Fashion Front Row after party with Samsung for the last day of New York Fashion Week. I stylus-sketched for Samsung once before, also for NYFW, but it was a while ago and I hadn't done it since. Digital sketching, for me, is nerve racking as I'm a pencil-to-paper kind of girl. Luckily Samsung sent me a tablet prior to the party so I had a few days to familiarize myself with the stylus and drawing apps again. Shown here are some of the illustrations I created as practice, the first attempt being the one atop this post. It may look nice but I have to admit it took a long time and many, many touch ups. It's challenging to try and create illustrative effects you know how to do so effortlessly with actual art supplies, paint and markers when only using a single stylus and tablet but after some practice I got the hang of it...with a few hiccups. One feature I loved discovering was that one of the color libraries within it was by Copic Markers. So I was able to pick my favorite go-to marker colors for skin and hair.
As I became more comfortable I decided to try and sketch from actual people and photos. The illustration above left is based off a photo of model Gigi Hadid and the coral crop top and full skirt look is inspired this look from Banana Republic's spring 16' collection. Just like last time, once I seemed to be getting the hang of using it it was time to give my Samsung Galaxy back. I may have to take the plunge and invest in one for myself, as it was a fun medium to draw in and I'd really like to experiment with it some more.

The Macy's Front Row fashion show airs tonight on E! so check your local listing and check it out! I Sketched a few famous faces from the show and will share those soon!

Custom Pet Sketches

The past few weeks I've been filling orders drawing one pet pup after the next and I want to share a few of my favorites here with you. Fashion illustration has always been my focus and I have to admit I was a little hesitant to commit to drawing something so different, but these darling dogs have charmed my socks off!
(Drawn above: Gracie, Poppy, and Henry & Berkley by Brooke Hagel)
In the past I would only occasionally draw a pet if a custom commission client requested it and until about a month ago I'd drawn maybe a half a dozen dogs, ever. But when I teamed up with IfOnly and we began brainstorming fathers day custom commission ideas, drawing man's best friend and offering dads ands dogs was a no brainer. Sometimes its refreshing to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. I'm so pleased I did and with the outcomes of all these delightful dogs. I hope they and their owners enjoy their custom illustrations as much as I enjoyed illustrating them!

Hamptons Magazine Sketches

Hamptons Magazine kicked off their very first Shop Hamptons page yesterday and I'm thrilled to say its adorned with Brooke Hagel sketches! Editor In Chief Samantha Yanks commissioned me to sketch out illustrations for the new page that each week will feature her top picks for Hamptons summer essentials of locally made products and artisan boutiques.
For the header I illustrated a quintessential Hamptons beach, dunes and all, with a girl laying out surrounded by her must-haves. I also drew a bunch of smaller illustrations to act as icons for categorizing the fab finds; shopping, home, beauty, food and wine. I'm excited to follow the page throughout the summer for all Samantha's spy luxe Hamptons treasures!

Sunglass Hut Custom Illustration Gifts

Custom fashion illustrations as Valentines were my month long project last month commissioned by Sunglass Hut and Ray-Ban and today I'm sharing a few of my favorites. Sunglass Hut gifted fashion bloggers and style influencers with frames from their newest collection then asked each recipient to strike a pose giving a kiss-face. The photos were sent to me and I sketched them up into custom illustrations that they framed and mailed to each influencer. The first illustration was of their spokesmodel, Georgia May Jagger (sketch shown above as well as styled in my studio in a sneak-peek photo I instagrammed a few weeks ago also shown at the bottom of this post.) Her wavy blond hair, bright fuchsia lips and round tortoise frames made ideal sketch inspiration.
Drawing while taking inspiration from fashion bloggers is always great, as they have such unique looks and are always so well styled and perfectly posed. And when working on a project like this, I'm  often introduced to new ones to follow like the women sketched above: Urban Bush Babes Takenya and Cipriano Quann, Nicole Alyse and Jessi Afshin, The Darling Detail.
If interested in commissioning a considerable amount of custom illustrations for corporate gifts or an event, email fabulousdoodles@gmail.com for information and a quote.

Custom Wedding Gift {Bridal Illustration}

Since wedding season is here I'm sharing some new custom bridal illustration wedding gifts. The first illustrated bride (shown above) received a custom illustration gift certificate from her sister on her wedding day. Shortly after her wedding the bride emailed me with photos and ready to start on the custom illustration process. We emailed back and forth over rough sketches, her favorite pose and the elements of her beautiful deco detailed gown that she liked best. In the end I loved her final sketch, and even featured it in a "Inspired Weekend" post a few weeks back.
The next bridal illustration was actually a gift from my brother to the beautiful bride of one of his oldest friends. A custom bridal sketch was a great wedding gift for her, being an uber-stylish girl and working in the fashion industry. Her J. Mendel gown featured a sleek and minimal bodice with an appliquéd skirt of modern stylized flowers. Working with my brother on an illustration was different than my typical client collaboration. He sent me photos and gave me free rein to sketch the pose and overall look I thought would be best, skipping all the steps in between. I simply presented him with the final illustration which he then framed and gave to the newlyweds.

Over the next few weeks I'll be sharing more custom bridal illustration clients so check back here on Fabulous Doodles soon. For more information on my custom bridal sketches you can check out the custom listings and gift certificates in my bridal print shop Brooklit Bride

Happy 5th Birthday Fabulous Doodles

In addition to being Memorial Day here in the US, today is also Fabulous Doodles' 5th birthday, aka my "blogiversary!" To commemorate the occasion last night I illustrated this girl sporting red, white and blue while kicking up her heels in celebration. Since I think she's a keeper, I've also added her to the shop if you'd like a print.

I honestly can't believe its been 5 years since I started Fabulous Doodles and began sharing my illustrations on a regular basis. At the time I was working full time as a product designer and thought starting a blog and Etsy shop would be a little side project. Becoming a full time independent fashion illustrator, working with iconic fashion brands including Vogue, Dior, and Hugo Boss, and being flown across the country to illustrate at events has been beyond a dream come true. In keeping with tradition here are some personal highlights of the past year:

  • Sketching for events for brands including Bobbi Brown, Lucky Brand, Dior, B. Brian Atwood, Dream Dry, Teen Vogue, Hugo Boss, Figleaves and Old Navy. I also flew out to LA to live sketch again, this time for a Pandora jewelry event for stylists and costume designers.
  • Continued receiving beautiful commissions for custom bridal illustrations, which have always been a favorite of mine to draw. I've also expanded my Brooklit Bride Etsy shop.
  • Began drawing children, starting with inspirational Instagrams of the adorable Sadie Yanks, daughter of Samantha Yanks Editor-in-Chief of Hamptons Magazine.
  • I was commissioned to draw large batches of fabulous fashion blogger inspired illustrations as custom gifts for Love Gold and Neutrogena
  • Live sketched at New York Fashion Week for event sponsor Samsung and for the very first time sketched digitally with a stylus pen on a Samsung Pro tablet.
  • Illustrated a 4-book series and the publisher released an amazing video book trailer. The first of the series, Chloe by Design: Making the Cut, is now available for pre-order on Amazon!
  • Although this was very recent, attending the star studded press preview of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly named Anna Wintour Costume Center's Charles James exhibit was pretty spectacular and certainly a highlight of my year. (Even Nigel Barker agreed with me, it was quite the monumental fashion industry event!)
Thanks for following along and hopefully this year brings even more incredible client collaborations and pinch-me moments to share here on Fabulous Doodles.

Custom Fashion Illustrations

Today I have some new custom fashion illustrations to share, the first client being the lovely Sunny Hostin, CNN Legal Analyst, host and mom! Sunny commissioned a custom illustration to be used on personal correspondence cards. She told me she absolutely loved the finished sketch and promptly  ordered it printed on personal notecards. Within just a week or so one of her friends reached out to me for one of her own, which I'm actually finishing up this weekend.
Fashion blogger Veronica Parga saw the custom illustrations I created for Love Gold and was eager to order one of her own to be used in her blog revamp and social media. Coincidently Sunny and Veronica chose the similar poses but the overall style couldn't be more different. Sunny is cheerful and light in a beach-chic coral printed caftan and Veronica is sultry rocking a glam-girl cheetah print jumpsuit and bold fuchsia pink lip.

For more examples and information on my custom illustrations check out the custom listings in my Brooklit Etsy shop and contact me for artwork usage rates.

Mapping Out Mr. Bazaar's American Book Tour

I'm excited to share this colorful map I illustrated for my friend Will Taylor, aka Mr. Bright Bazaar, to help him announce his first American book tour. It was wonderful to collaborate with Will on this illustration. We went for a soft watercolored look, which I created primary using Pantone Letraset and Copic brush tip markers, Faber-Castell pencils for sketching the highlights and outlining, and a Micron pen for tiny details and final touches.
I'm so proud and excited for Will, making the jump from design blogger to book author. Will's first book Bright Bazaar: Embracing Color for Make-You-Smile Style is now available for pre-order and will be released later this month with a stateside book tour kicking off May 1st. With the help of West Elm and Jonathan Adler Will will be hosting events in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Click on over to Bright Bazaar for all the dates, signings, and party info.

I'm thrilled to see my illustration up on Bright Bazaar, and I can't wait to see Will at his NYC events! Hope you can make it too.

Sketching the Old Navy Spring/Summer Preview

Today is officially the first day of spring so what better day to share sketches and photos from the Old Navy Spring/Summer 2014 Press Preview. I am a huge fan and major customer of Old Navy so I was thrilled to be asked to collaborate with them sketching one of their favorite spring looks for their exclusive press preview party invitation (shown above.)
In addition to sketching a girl for the invitation I also attended the event, live-sketching custom fashion illustrations of party guests alongside Katie Rodgers of Paper Fashion. Being a fellow fashion illustrator, I've been familiar with Katie and her work for years, but it was actually the first time we met! (You can see us below, striking a pose with her pretty paint palette. She's inspired me to whip out the gouache and brushes.)
Party guests including editors, fashion bloggers, and even a Bravolebrity were able to take their "selfie fashion illustrations," as the Old Navy team called them, home with them as custom party gifts along with a bag of new pieces from the collection. I hope today being the first day of spring brings with it some springtime weather because I've had enough of this dreary frigid winter and can't wait to start sporting my bright new Old Navy summer pieces!

For information and rates or to have me live-sketch at your next corporate event or party email FabulousDoodles@gmail.com

Inspired Weekend

A peek into my inspired weekend of adding new fashion illustration prints to my Etsy shop, sketching dessert tables, and marathon watching a new show.

1. I've been giving my Etsy shop a little revamp with an infusion of new sketches and "Poodle Proud" here is a favorite just added. (I actually drew these two a few months ago and am happy to finally be sharing them.)

2. Silver sparkle pencils from the Michael's dollar bin. I ran in for a picture frame but came out with these and love them!

3. Sketched dessert table illustrations again this weekend for one of my favorite repeat clients, sweets stylist Amy Atlas. Since I can't share the new sketches just yet here is an older one I never posted. This wintry dessert table was  designed for Anthropologie's holiday catalogue preview party.

4. This weekend, while sketching I dove into a new show (new to me that is) marathoning Scandal. I'm now officially obsessed with Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. Her wardrobe is a stunning array of monochromatic looks of whites, grays and pale blush. From her jackets, coats, sweaters to her silk pajamas and even workout wear, its one beautiful look after the next. Ahh what I'd do for this fictitious closet.

I actually illustrated Kerry Washington on Miu Miu at last years Golden Globes but I just may have to do more now inspired by her Scandal character.

Live-Sketching at NYFW with Samsung Galaxy

This past New York Fashion Week I had the opportunity to try something new, sketching on a tablet. A Samsung Galaxy Note Pro tablet to be exact. As a sponsor of NYFW, Samsung had a space in the main lobby and I was hired to live-sketch fashion illustrations of fashion week attendees who passed through the Samsung lounge.
Live-sketching NYFW attendees is great, since even with this crazy winter "polar-vortex" people still tend to dress to impress for shows and aren't donning the typical head-to-toe black typically found at most New York events. I was able to really experiment with tablet fashion illustration, rendering a variety of furs, leathers, knits, prints and even sheers all in an array of colors and styles.
To be honest I was really nervous to try sketching on a tablet. I'd never done it before and wasn't sure if I'd be able to figure it out and achieve the look I wanted with only a stylist pen, tablet screen and no actual art tools. To my surprise though it was very user friendly and I got the hang of it pretty quickly. (I also had Samsung experts there to answer any questions, which was helpful.) The "S pen" has such a fine point and the screen is so touch-sensitive that the level of detail and precision you can achieve is pretty incredible, much like an actual pen or pencil. The Note Pro is very lightweight and has a large paper-sized 12.2-inch screen. Lastly, it was especially great for live-sketching since I could email jpegs of the illustrations directly to the people I was sketching, like Bella shown here (above) from Elle Magazine. I enjoyed drawing on the Galaxy Note Pro so much that I'm now considering purchasing one for more digital drawing.

Live Sketching at New York Fashion Week

I'm excited to share that I am live-sketching custom fashion illustrations at New York Fashion Week in the Samsung Galaxy lounge at Lincoln Center! Anyone attending NYFW can pop by and get sketched by me on a Samsung Galaxy tablet and the illustration will be sent directly to you via email. Normally I'm a pencil-and-marker-to-paper kind of girl and I admit, I was a little intimidated as I've never drawn on a tablet before. I've had a day to play around with it though and its been fun figuring out all the tools and effects to achieve the illustrative look I want, like the stylized girl I drew for this invite (above.) I just may have to add a Samsung Galaxy tablet to my wish list!

Latina Magazine Sketch

A few months ago Latina Magazine commissioned me to sketch a custom fashion illustration of their advise columnist, Pauline Campos. Her column is titled Dímelo, which thanks to google translate I've learned means "Tell Me." My sketch of Pauline will be used each and every month atop the column as her bio image, so the next time your by a newsstand check it out!

Customer Service Rep Fashion Illustration

A few months ago I was hired for a unique illustration project, and not by my typical fashion and beauty clientele, CapWest Mortgage asked me to illustrate "the face" of their customer service department. Anytime someone uses any of their customer service tools, reads their blog, or contacts them via social media, they will be greeted by the smiling face of my illustrated "Cathy West." She's a blond haired blue eyed woman reflecting the company colors of yellow and blue, has a big friendly smile, professional glasses and is sporting a monogramed polo. I hope CapWest Mortgage clients and potential clients enjoy my little customer service rep fashion illustration.

Blow Bar Hair Sketches

Today I have some fun new hair illustrations to share. These beauty sketches were commissioned by a wonderful client, who opened a new blowout bar called Blow In Blow Out. The head shots shown here, along with a few full fashion figures, are used as a visual style menu in their New Jersey salon as well as on their website. The illustrated blowout styles include: Glam Girl with smoothed out tresses, Bay Head, featuring of soft be achy waves, and My Little Pony (all shown above.) Below is the voluminous and curly Jersey Girl, and the super sleek and shiny Straight Edge style.
These sketches for Blow In Blow Out are just one project of many from the past few months that I completed but didn't get the chance to post about until now. Over the next few weeks I'm going to try and play catch up and share more of the projects I've been working on and events I've been live-sketching for.

Hugo Boss Holiday Party Sketches

Last week I live-sketched at my first holiday party of the season for fashion and lifestyle brand Hugo Boss. It was their annual employee holiday party and was held downtown at VIP Room in New York's Meatpacking District. The Hugo Boss employees made fabulous models to sketch for the night and were all so enthusiastic about receiving a custom illustration even Hugo Boss CEO Mark Brasher (shown above, left) sat with me for a custom sketch of his own.
It was quite a large party and a line quickly formed for custom fashion illustrations that lasted the whole night but it was wonderful to meet and sketch all the chic Hugo Boss employees and I was so happy to be a part of their company celebration.

For more information about my event-sketching or rates to sketch fashion illustrations at your corporate event or private party you can email me at FabulousDoodles@gmail.com.
