Live-Sketching Bridal Fashion Week for Brides Magazine

Recently I attended Bridal Fashion Week to live sketch designers final looks on behalf of Brides Magazine's social media channels and it was without a doubt one of my favorite projects to date. With my sketchbook and art supplies in tow I attended Reem Acra, Monique Lhuillier and Marchesa's Spring 2016 Bridal Collections along with a photographer and camera crew to record me live-sketching for photos and time-lapse videos.

I was invited to arrive early to each show for a closer look at the gown I'd be illustrating. The first was Reem Acra and it was an exquisite cream colored re-embroidered metallic lace long sleeve dress with circular tulle underlay. (Sketch shown above) I took some photos of the dress details, watched the models in hair and makeup, then headed out to my seat for the show. Promptly after the show I scooted backstage with the camera crew where my model was waiting for me in the finale dress to pose. I completed the sketch in about 15-20 minutes and she was thrilled with the outcome, and said she'd actually never been sketched before. I then thanked and shared the sketch with Reem Acra. She loved it and was quite complimentary of my work, which she had checked out prior to my arrival. (Ekk!)
Next up, Monique Lhuillier. Again I arrived early and was brought backstage for a closer look at the finale gown. Waiting for my sketching location I sat backstage for quite a while watching the models and snapping pix. They said if I liked another gown more I could sketch whichever gown I thought would make the best illustration so instead of the long-sleeved finale gown I chose a strapless tulle ballgown with a delicate lace bodice with lace appliqués that trickled onto the skirt, to differentiate it from the dress I drew that morning. After the show I got set up in the room they were shooting the look-book in, so again, the model was right there and got to see her final sketch along with the Monique Lhuillier (see below.)
Lastly Marchesa, which unsurprisingly was flawless. When I arrived early backstage I was told the design team wanted to meet with me. Two of the head designers came out and showed me the three contenders they had in mind for the sketch. I chose this gown (below) because of the unique gathered bodice and beautiful three dimensional florals throughout the etherial skirt. I didn't realize at the time, but this was in-fact the finale look. Being a presentation situation, not a runway show, I was able to set up with the camera crew and sketch while the model posed on the pedestal. I saw the two Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig during the show but unfortunately not after, once the sketch was complete.
It doesn't get much better than sketching Bridal Fashion Week for Brides Magazine. It was a dream project and hopefully I'll have the opportunity to do it again. Through the years I've attended countless New York Fashion Weeks but up until now, actually only one bridal show, and I have to say I'm sold! Beautiful New York venues showcasing one stunning fairytale gown after the next, it was a fashion illustrating dream come true. You can check out more of my sketches and a time lapse video over on Brides Magazine instagram account. Thank you to the team at Brides and all the designers who welcomed me!

VOGUE and Viktor & Rolf | You're Invited

You're invited to join me and Vogue this Thursday as I customize my haute couture inspired sketches of Viktor & Rolf designs! We're celebrating the first anniversary of Bonbon, Viktor & Rolf's bow bottled fragrance directly inspired by their avant-garde fall 2013 haute couture collection and would love to have you there:

Saks Fifth Avenue
Viktor & Rolf on One
Fifth Avenue & 49th Street
Thursday, April 23rd 6-8 PM
RSVP: 212.940.4169

I've been a longtime fan of the couture design duo. Their legendary Russian doll collection featuring Maggie Rizer in layer upon layer of couture was one of the first shows I remember truly being blown away by and was shown the same year I delved into fashion as a fashion design major at FIT. Illustrating their designs, and having my sketches pre-approved by the designers for this Vogue event was definitely a "pinch me" moment in my fashion illustration career. I hope to see you all at the event where I'll be customizing these croquis to your and other Vogue guests likeliness!

Vogue & La Mer | Live-Sketching Illustrations

Last week I live-sketched custom fashion illustrations at a private party for Vogue and La Mer at Bloomingdales Manhattan flagship. I've admired and occasionally indulged in La Mer products for years so needless to say I was thrilled when my friends at Vogue asked if I was available for this intimate event. La Mer Executive Director Clyde Johnson (shown above with his custom illustration) and Vogue Market Stylist Cara Crowley hosted the party which included cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, an array of La Mer products and my custom fashion illustrations of all the gorgeous guests as personal gifts for each of them to bring home. It was another fun Vogue event and I hope you enjoyed this little sampling of photos and sketches from it.

Sunglass Hut Custom Illustration Gifts

Custom fashion illustrations as Valentines were my month long project last month commissioned by Sunglass Hut and Ray-Ban and today I'm sharing a few of my favorites. Sunglass Hut gifted fashion bloggers and style influencers with frames from their newest collection then asked each recipient to strike a pose giving a kiss-face. The photos were sent to me and I sketched them up into custom illustrations that they framed and mailed to each influencer. The first illustration was of their spokesmodel, Georgia May Jagger (sketch shown above as well as styled in my studio in a sneak-peek photo I instagrammed a few weeks ago also shown at the bottom of this post.) Her wavy blond hair, bright fuchsia lips and round tortoise frames made ideal sketch inspiration.
Drawing while taking inspiration from fashion bloggers is always great, as they have such unique looks and are always so well styled and perfectly posed. And when working on a project like this, I'm  often introduced to new ones to follow like the women sketched above: Urban Bush Babes Takenya and Cipriano Quann, Nicole Alyse and Jessi Afshin, The Darling Detail.
If interested in commissioning a considerable amount of custom illustrations for corporate gifts or an event, email fabulousdoodles@gmail.com for information and a quote.

Red Carpet Fashion Sketches | 2015 Oscars

Hollywoods biggest night of red-carpet fashion was this Sunday, the 2015 Oscars and of course I had sketch my favorites as I watched! I started drawing full-scale more traditional "polished" fashion illustrations, as I've done in the past, but as the show progressed I decided I liked these smaller "quickie" sketches and chose to share a this grouping of my top picks. Immediately upon posting them on instagram during the broadcast I got likes and comments from a Vogue editor, top celebrity stylist, and an E! News fashion correspondent, which obviously made me feel good about my decision. Its pretty incredible the power of Instagram and the ability to instantly share work and get feedback in the moment.

Illustrated above above: Reese Witherspoon looking classic and chic in Tom Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow in the perfect pale pink (again) by Ralph and Russo, Jennifer Lopez was a golden goddess in Ellie Saab and Kerry Washington looked beautiful in white in her go-to designer, Miu Miu.

I wish there were more epic red-carpet events like this, because I truly love illustrating a red-carpet moment. Its fashion at its finest which is truly ideal fashion illustration inspiration, for this fashion illustrator at least!

Brooklit Fashion Phone Covers | Casetify Artist

I'm so excited to announce that starting this week my fashion illustrations are available on phone cases via Casetify within their Artist Collections. Through my Brooklit gallery you can choose not only which sketch is your favorite but they also offer nearly 30 phone models to choose from ranging from iPhones to Samsungs and even LGs. You can pick the basic snap-on case or go with something a little more special like the new metaluxe cases in rose gold or silver. (I personally love the metaluxe and ordered the rose gold "Croqui Collection" design.) As if I couldn't be more excited about this collaboration, they also ship free worldwide! So now all my friends in the United Kingdom, France and Australia and beyond can have one. Lastly I know I'm sounding like a infomercial here but I have an incentive to share, when you join and place an order through this link you will receive $10 off!!!

For months while on my Vogue/Clinique Sketch Tour I was sharing on photos of my custom phone cases (via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) there were so many inquiries and I felt terrible that the only way to get one was to come the actual events. One of the reasons I was so excited to be asked to join the Casetify Artist Collections was because now anyone, anywhere can have a phone case from me! I've even included the same three designs from the Vogue/Clinique tour in my Casetify gallery; Margo, Kiss Kiss and Leopard Heels.

I hope you like illustrations I've chosen to kick off my Casetify collection, shown above are just a few so be sure and head over to the gallery to see the full collection. If you order I do hope you'll share a photo as I'd love to see them! And don't forget to use my referral link/code txce7h for $10 off.

Vogue & Clinique Sketching Tour | Throwback

My sketching tour with Vogue and Clinique was without a doubt the highlight of last year and although I posted the invitations, and shared along on Instagram, I never recapped the tour here on Fabulous Doodles. As many do at the start of a new year I've been reflecting and setting new goals, and thinking about what I'd like to focus on in the new year. In doing so I looked back to see what my highlights were. Today I'm starting a "Throwback Thursday" series and looking back on some of my past projects and events that I either want to highlight again, like this Vogue Clinique tour, and some that I have yet to share at all. On this tour throughout the summer and fall I visited five cities, appeared at nine events and live sketched countless custom illustrations of pretty party guests.
These live-sketching events were promoting Clinique's new Smart Serum, so in addition to creating custom fashion illustrations of guests we also printed them onto "smart" phone covers. I pre-designed some that were included with bonus gifts as well created custom ones for each guest. We were trying something new and it was a hit! At the start of the tour I was only signed on to do four events but after the first the Clinique team was thrilled and more cities kept being added, eventually making it 9 stops! Before I knew it I was city hopping across the country from New York, to San Francisco, Santa Clara, Miami, back to New York, To Chicago and Seattle! Sketching at events within Nordstroms, Macy's, Bloomingdales and Lord and Taylor.

Jet setting aside it was so heartwarming meeting Fabulous Doodles readers from around the country and seeing how excited people were to both meet me and have their own custom sketch. Everyone from fans of fashion illustration, to aspiring artists, to fashion bloggers and fashion design students came out. I compiled a little slideshow here to feature a few:

...

Going on a sketching tour for two powerhouse brands like Vogue and Clinique, and traveling the country with a Vogue Stylist was certainly a career highlight! Hopefully there will be more big events and partnerships to come, but in the mean time I'll be looking back at this post and happily remembering all the people and places I met last year.

Ella Henderson US Album Release Party

Earlier this week I had an incredible front row spot at Ella Henderson's US Album Release Party for her first album Chapter One and now I can't seem to stop sketching her! My British bestie Will Taylor introduced me to Ella's music about a year ago and her first single Ghost quickly became one my top songs of last year and pretty much my anthem of the last 6+ months. (So much so, I made it the soundtrack to my little 2014 year-end insta-video.)

It was surreal going with Will, one of my best friends, to this event and getting to be a part of Ella's US album release. We sang along, danced, sipped champagne and laughed the night away. It was the kind of unforgettable night that doesn't come around too often and when that happens I'm always eager to capture it. I also have to say that Ella looked fantastic and you know I love a jumpsuit! Remember this sketch of Vogue stylist Kelen, whom I toured the US with sketching for Vogue and Clinique?

If you haven't yet I highly recommend checking out Ella Henderson. Ghost and Beautifully Unfinished are my two favorites but the whole Chapter One album is great! I'm so excited she's finally here in the states and looking forward to seeing her career soar.

Custom Illustration Surprise for Roselyn Sanchez

A few weeks ago I was contacted by actor Eric Winter to commission a custom fashion illustration of his gorgeous wife actress Roselyn Sanchez and their adorable daughter as a surprise Christmas gift. Eric did a little investigating as to his wife's favorite red carpet moments and we reviewed photos of both Roselyn and their daughter to pick looks that they both loved and best reflected the girls personalities, colors and attitudes.
I start custom illustrations with a batch of rough sketches for the client to review and choose a pose from (shown above left.) Originally the illustration was only to featured Roselyn and Sebi in their dresses but after Eric reviewed more of my work he asked if designer shopping bags could be added and possibly a Vogue magazine popping out, since I often illustrate for Vogue and it's a favorite of Ros'. I was happy to make the changes and did so in the next step, the polished line drawing (close-up shown above right.) Eric promptly approved the line drawing and I moved ahead to the final color rendering.

Eric had the illustration framed and surprised his girls Christmas morning. I was thrilled to hear it was a hit, Roselyn even instagramming and tweeting a picture saying she was "in love with her fab gift" and Eric said "you rocked it!"  Needless to say working with Eric on this custom illustration was  a pleasure! I loved the outcome and was so touched by the overwhelming response from them and their friends.

You can order a gift or commission your own custom illustration through my Etsy shops Brooklit and Brooklit Bride.  There you will also see examples of my custom illustrations and can read more about the custom process.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year and a big hello to 2015! I hope you all had a fabulous holiday season and are feeling refreshed and energized. Last year traveling quite a bit and being all around busy and chaotic, social media became a welcomed convenience in sharing what I was up to and sketches and projects that were in the works. I'm excited to refocus here, enrich the blog and work hard to make my dreams a reality this year with new collaborations, inspirations, and creative adventures. Cheers to a fresh start and new year!

Custom Bridal Illustration Wedding Gift

Custom bridal fashion illustrations commissioned as wedding gifts are continually in the works in my studio yet I haven't featured any in some time. I drew this beautiful bride weeks ago as a wedding gift from her assistant. Yesterday I was reminded of them, and this illustration which I loved, while waiting for someone in their same office building, the Hearst Tower. After sucessfully searching my camera roll I thought it was time to share the photos and illustration. This was a gorgeous gown to draw, with a soft champagne colored lining subtly peeking out beneath an intricate lace overlay.

This photo was taken just before packing and sending the bride the original sketch. All original custom bridal illustrations are adhered to a matte board to prevent bending, tied in a white tulle bow and placed in a cardboard photo mailer along with a thank you note and business card, both featuring my illustrations.

For more information on my custom bridal illustrations you can check out the gift certificate and custom listings in bridal print shop Brooklit Bride.

Inspired Weekend, UK Edition

This weekend I set off to London for a long overdue visit with my British bestie Will Taylor-Willis. We took a little trip to Edinburgh, Scotland since I'd never been before, and had a wonderful weekend exploring the city, playing tourist, shopping and indulging in some incredible bites. As if spending quality time with my best friend and his amazing husband wasn't nice enough, my weekend was made all the better by two surprising features of my illustrations.

1. Nigel Barker shared this instagram of me completing a custom sketch of him and his wife Chrissy from a week or two prior. It's honestly one of my favorite custom couple illustrations thats I've drawn and it was such a thrill to see he shared it.

2. Edinburgh charmed my socks off with its cobble stone streets, tiny "Diagon Alley" style shops, castle, gothic architecture and handsome clocks, like this one atop of the beautiful Balmoral hotel.

3. For my travels I had bookmarked Domaine Home especially to check out their feature of A Lust for Life: Inside Olivia Lopez's Fashionable Loft, and was shocked to find my illustration of her in the article! I had drawn this custom sketch of the beautiful fashion blogger nearly two years ago as a commission for Love Gold.

4. No trip abroad would be complete for me without a "visual packing list." Sketching out my outfits is the only way I can pack for a big trip and really see what I have, if it will all flow and be interchangeable and if I'm missing anything. I snapped this pic just before leaving for the airport to be reunited with my crazy bestie.

Fabulous Doodles Inspiration No.3, Audrey Schilt

Today for Ralph Lauren's birthday I'd like to spotlight one of my favorite illustrators and designers, Audrey Schilt. For 22 years Audrey worked [and sketched] alongside Ralph Lauren eventually becoming Creative Director of Collection. I've been a longtime admirer of her work and after featuring her here on Fabulous Doodles a few times I'm happy to say that we've become online pals. Her gorgeous sketches continually inspire me to loosen up, play with figure positions, draping, light and shadows. If you're not familiar with her work I strongly suggest you click over to her site and check out this post from my archives of Audrey's Fashion Institute of Technology retrospective nearly 5 years ago!

Golden Gallery

This week I've been having fun styling some of my favorite bridal sketches onto this amazing gallery picture frame wallpaper from Graham and Brown. This year they're celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their iconic frame paper and in celebration have released the print in new color ways including this sophisticated metallic gold. This wallpaper creates an instant gallery wall in any space and is fantastic for a working art studio. To compliment the white and gold pattern I chose to adorn it with my bridal sketches, prints and businesscards from my Brooklit Bride shop.
To see the other limited edition color combinations now available as well as the paper used in a variety of different room set ups click on over to Graham and Brown.

Inspired Weekend, Fall Finds

A new season always inspires me to do a little shopping and today I'm sharing some favorite new fall purchases. For a week now the new gold iPhone 6 Plus has been mine and I'm absolutely loving it! Since my illustrations are like my babies I chose one of my current favorites to use as my mobile wallpaper. I have to say she's been quite the conversation starter while traveling this weekend to live sketch a Vogue event in Chicago and back at a private VIP party in downtown Manhattan.

1. Today's instagram of all my new goodies including my new beautiful handmade tan leather tassel clutch by Market Colors and gold iPhone 6 Plus. (Use code: BROOKLIT for 20% off the Canyon Tassel Clutch until Friday Oct. 3rd, 2014)

2. My favorite Fashion illustration print from my Brooklit Etsy shop inspired by Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa at the Met Ball.

3. New beauty obsessions: Nirvana White rollerball by Elizabeth and James, Asos gold metal hair clip and Marc Jacobs liquid eyeliner. I pretty much love the entire MJ Beauty line and can't seem to stop adding to my collection but this felt brush tipped eyeliner pen is beyond perfection! One reason I may like it to much is that its a very similar tip to the Copic Markers I illustrate with.
